KINKY BOOTS … A Sort of Traditional Musical

0

OK, OK … this is about a theater outing in OCTOBER for cryin’ out loud … but it’s to go see KINKY BOOTS which is likely to clean up at the Tony Awards on June 9th … so it was important to get tickets before then (so far, there are only 20)  or else this was going to be a Book of Mormon situation where tickets would not be available for a long, loooooong time.  So, Meg Florio, half of the MWC’s very own theater-booking duo, snippety-snapped up a block for the matinee on Wednesday, October 2nd.   If these get sold out quickly, (sorry – a more common occurrence lately) every effort will be made to get more.  But it’s not clear that will be possible – it wasn’t so easy to get these !  CORRECTION:  These tickets are $92.50 each, much less than initially reported !  A reservation /payment link is on its way to all members.  No guests (except spouses/ partners), please.                                        KB-0076M-4x5-logo.inddCyndi Lauper copyCRAZY LIKE FOXES THESE TWO ARE:  Both the four time Tony Award-winning Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Hairspray …etc) and the multi-Grammy Award winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper (Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Time After Time …etc.) have created transgressive, wild, bohemian professional personae which are true …. to a point.  But their public images mask other aspects of their natures  which are not as clearly apparent:  that of driven, hard-working, prolific, and enduring creative theater professionals who both know how to … bring it.  Fierstein turned 60 last year and poppins 171106Lauper is reaching that milestone next month.  But anyone who thinks they’re intending to “retire” – well, think not and witness their recent joint endeavor, the wildly, hugely, kookily entertaining musical adaptation of KINKY BOOTS which just opened on Broadway.  Fierstein wrote the show’s book and Lauper took charge of the music and lyrics.  These two homegrown talents (Fierstein grew up in Brooklyn and Lauper in Queens) are certainly favorites in the Tony race this year, not only for their talent – but for doing NYC proud.

Who woulda thunk ….that a musical based on the story of a failing shoe factory in the North of England which ends up getting saved by specializing in fetish footwear for male transvestites – especially when the 2005 movie was sort of a flop – would end up being the current season’s hit musical and a strong contender for the 13 Tony Awards for which it has been nominated (the most nominations this year; vying in 12 categories against the also terrific MATILDA) … well, that’s the magic of theater!  Hope the YouTube clip of the show loads properly so you can take a peek:  http://youtu.be/H7csnufxx-M
